Cláusulas Relativas - Teoría

USO: Para dar información que ayuda a identificar uno de los sustantivos de la oración. Ese sustantivo recibe el nombre de "REFERENTE" de la cláusula relativa.

EJEMPLOS:

'She's the woman who's wearing a red coat.'
'The music which you played yesterday was brilliant.'
'The movie that you bought is fantastic.'

CLÁUSULAS RELATIVAS AL SUJETO

USO: Cuando el sujeto del verbo en la cláusula relativa es el mismo que el referente (el sustantivo del cual hablamos).

FORMA:

Estas Cláusulas Relativas comienzan con pronombres relativos:
WHO (para personas),
WHICH (para animales u objetos),
THAT (para personas, animales u objetos) y para las palabras EVERYTHING, NOTHING, SOMETHING o ANYTHING
WHOSE (para posesivos).

[... REFERENTE + PRO. REL. + VERBO ...]

EJEMPLOS:

'She's the woman who/that sang that song.'
'Let's see the film that/which won a golden globe.'
'He forgot everything that happened.'
'She's the woman who text me the other day.'
'Where is the company that is in charge of this construction?'

[... REFERENTE + PRO. REL. + SUSTANTIVO + VERBO ...]

EJEMPLOS:

'That's the man whose kid is annoying!'
'She's the woman whose mother flirted with me.'

Recuerde que la Clausula Relativa siempre contiene en verbo.

CLÁUSULAS RELATIVAS AL OBJETO

USO: Cuando el sujeto del verbo en la cláusula relativa no es el mismo que el referente.

FORMA:

Estas Cláusulas Relativas comienzan con pronombres relativos:
WHO (para personas)/WHOM (en ingles muy formal)
WHICH (para animales u objetos),
THAT (para personas, animales u objetos y para las palabras EVERYTHING, NOTHING, SOMETHING o ANYTHING).

Tenemos la opción de no utilizar el pronombre relativo si este no es el sujeto del verbo en la cláusula relativa, excepto cuando la cláusula relativa comienza con una preposición (en inglés formal).

[... REFERENT + (PRO. REL.) + ORACION ...]

EJEMPLOS:

'Tim is the man who/that/whom I know.'
'Here's the dvd which/that you gave me last week.'
'It is everything that I know.'

Si hay una preposición al inicio de la cláusula relativa, debemos utilizar los pronombres relativos WHOM o WHICH a menos que desplacemos la preposición al final de la cláusula.

EJEMPLO:

'The man with whom you had a fight is my dad.'
O
'The man (that) you were fighting with is my dad.'

También podemos reemplazar IN WHICH, AT WHICH y ON WHICH con WHERE o WHEN.

EJEMPLOS:

'That's the house where the Beatles lived.'
'Saturday was the day when I meet your mother.'

Si el sujeto del verbo en la cláusula relativa es el mismo que el sujeto en la cláusula principal (pero no el mismo que el referente), podemos reemplazar el verbo de la cláusula relativa con un infinitivo.

EJEMPLO:

'I need a film to watch at night.' = 'I need a film which I can watch at night.'
