Past Continuous - Teoría

USO: Usamos el pasado continuo para hablar de una acción continua que estaba ocurriendo en un momento particular del pasado.

EJEMPLOS

- Weren't you working with her yesterday?
- No, I wasn't. I was shopping for Christmas presents.

- What were you doing when your mobile phone rang?
- I was sleeping.

STATEMENTS

AFFIRMATIVE:

FORMA: [SUJETO + WAS/WERE + VERBO-ING ...]

I/He/She/It was waiting for him.
You/We/They were waiting for him.

NEGATIVA:

FORMA: [SUJETO + WAS + NOT/WERE + NOT + VERBO-ING ...]

I/He/She/It was not (wasn't) waiting for him.

YES/NO QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

FORMA: [WAS/WERE + SUJETO + VERBO-ING ... ?]

- Was I/he/she/it waiting for her?
- Were you/we/they waiting for her?

FORMA: [YES/NO + SUJETO + BE (NOT)]

- Yes, I/he/she/it was.
- No, I/he/she/it wasn't.
- Yes, you/we/they were.

PAST CONTINUOUS - VS. PAST SIMPLE

USO: Utilizamos el Pasado Simple para hablar de una acción que se completo en el pasado. Usamos el Pasado Continuo para hablar acerca de una acción que continuo durante un tiempo en el pasado.

También podemos utilizar el Pasado Simple y el Pasado Continuo juntos en la misma frase, para mosstrar que una acción o evento corto ocurrio durante una acción o evento mas largo. Si mencionamos la acción mas corta primero, por lo general unimos las dos partes de la frase con la palabra 'WHILE'.

EJEMPLOS:

'The mobile phone rang while she was dancing!.'
'The motorbike broke down while he was driving home.'

Si mencionamos la acción mas larga primero, por lo general unimos las dos partes de la frase con la palabra 'WHEN'.

EJEMPLOS:

'She was dancing a shower when the mobile phone rang.'
'He was driving home when the motorbike broke down.'
